Thurrock and Newport County played out an entertaining 0-0 draw with the visitors likely to have left Ship Lane the happier side.

In a match with very few clear cut chances, traveling ‘keeper Glyn Thompson earned his Man of the Match performance thanks to outstanding saves from Fola Orilonishe and Blue Square South Player of the Month for November, Leon McKenzie.

McKenzie had the first chance of the game in the opening minute, turning on Che Stadhart’s through ball but could not keep his shot down.

In the 18th minute, County’s very own Craig Hughes cut in from the right flank but his shot also flew over the bar.

On the half hour mark Andy Sambrook’s free kick was headed by a Newport defender straight to McKenzie whose stunning volley was equally as impressively saved by Thompson.

Seven minutes later, Orilonishe beat Paul Bignot on the left and as he curled his right footed shot towards the bottom right hand corner, Thompson was once again at hand to tip his shot round the post.

In the 58th minute, Mark Wright’s deep cross was headed straight at Thompson by McKenzie.

Newport began to put pressure on Thurrock and on 74 minutes, Wayne Turk’s low cross into the box was headed narrowly wide by Bignot.

Danny Rose tried a late ambitious 40 yard effort which flew over and wide, before Thurrock raced down the other end with McKenzie and Wright linking up to provide Stadhart an opportunity but the visitors somehow cleared off the line.

Charlie Howard was dismissed for Thurrock in injury time having picked up his second booking of the game for an off the ball incident which also saw Rose become the fifth County player booked in an otherwise clean game.

Thurrock: Woolley, Clark, Wright, Swaine (64, Spencer), Paine, Sambrook, Campana, Howard, McKenzie, Stadhart, Orilonishe (76, Hart). Subs not used: Lechmere, Anderson, Gilbey

Newport: Thompson, Bignot, Giles, Turk, Cook, Cochlin, Rose, Jenkins (73, Harris), Hughes, Reid (80, Duffy), Cooper (88, Klein-Davis). Subs not used: Colborne, James

Thurrock were unlucky to lose out in Saturday’s Blue Square South clash in Dorset, losing out by the odd goal in seven in a real festive thriller.

Fleet made the perfect start with a goal from Leon McKenzie in the second minute.

Wes Fogden equalised on 34 minutes and Jamie Mudge gave them the lead just three minutes later.

However, Mark Wright ensured the borough side went in at the break on level terms when he scored right on the whistle.

Mudge scored his second and the Magpies’ third four minutes into the second period and he completed his hat trick with 20 minutes remaining.

David Bryant ensured the majority in the 357 crowd had a nervy end when he pulled a third back for Thurrock, but Dorchester held on for three valuable points that take them above their opponents.

A last minute goal from Bromley cost Thurrock two points after they dominated the second half at Hayes Lane.

Bromley did dominate the early exchanges and took the lead after 23 minutes when Ryan Hall slotted home from close range after Lee Flynn lost the ball on the halfway line and Ashley-Paul Robinson played a great ball into the box. Thurrock scored a remarkable equaliser on the half hour when Alex Campana’s cross was smashed into his own net inexplicably by Swaibi.

Thurrock were all of a sudden well on top and Fola Orinolishe shot straight at Gareth Williams when well placed. Moments later Orinolishe won a header with Williams and Kenny Clark’s volley was well cleared off of the line. T

hurrock’s failure to score when on top cost them minutes later when Warren McBean slotted home well after being put through by Nic McDonnell.

Thurrock came out firing for the second half and levelled a minute in when Leon McKenzie stabbed home at the second attempt. Unbelievably, minutes later Thurrock manager Hakan Hayrettin was sent off for swearing at the referee, a charge he vociferously denied.

Thurrock continued to dominate and took the lead 20 minutes into the half when Campara’s fantastic cross was headed onto his bar by a defender and McKenzie scored his second of the game. A minute later McKenzie was desperately unlucky not to have a hat-trick when his flicked shot was well saved by Williams.

Charlie Howard went close with a quarter of an hour to go when he volleyed just over.

With one minute to go, Bromley equalised when McBean stabbed home after a scramble following a free kick.

Thurrock still had a chance to win the game but Howard shot just wide.

Thurrock: Woolley, Clark, Wright (Anderson 83), Spencer, Paine, Flynn, Campana, Howard, McKenzie, Stadhart, Orilonishe. Subs not used. Lechmere, Hart, Hughes, Knight.
